Tickets for the 2017 Para Sport Festival have gone on sale, with the World Para Swimming and World Para Powerlifting Championships set to be held in Mexico City from 30 September to 6 October. It is the first time that two of Para sport’s biggest competitions are being staged together.
Around 550 swimmers from more than 60 countries are expected to compete at the Francisco Marquez Olympic Swimming Pool, while over 360 powerlifters from 65 countries will gather in the Juan de la Barrera Olympic Gymnasium.
Both venues are located in the same building.
For both sports, it is the first major event since the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games and the start of a new Paralympic cycle for Tokyo 2020.
A total of 24,500 tickets will be for sale and will cost MXN 100 (around USD 5.50) for each day, including Para powerlifting competition and Para Swimming morning and evening sessions.

Athletes to watch
Among the world’s top swimmers competing at Mexico City 2017 will be home crowd favourites Gustavo Sanchez and Patricia Valle, Brazil’s Daniel Dias, New Zealand’s Sophie Pascoe, Cuba’s Lorenzo Perez Escalona, USA’s Jessica Long, China’s Tao Zheng, the Netherlands’ Liesette Bruinsma, Belarus’ Ihar Boki and Singapore’s Yip Pin Xiu.
In powerlifting, Mexico will be hopeful of landing gold through Amalia Perez. Other top powerlifters include the world’s strongest man Siamand Rahman of Iran, Egypt’s Sherif Osman, Nigeria’s Josephine Orji, China’s Lei Liu, Greece’s Pavlos Mamalos and Turkey’s Nazmiye Muratli.
History
The first World Para Swimming Championships took place in Valleta, Malta, in 1994. It was followed by Christchurch 1994, Mar del Plata 2002, Durban 2006, Eindhoven 2010, Montreal 2013 and Glasgow 2015.
Uppsala, Sweden, staged the inaugural edition of the World Para Powerlifting Championships in 1994. It was followed by Dubai 1998, Kuala Lumpur 2002, Busan 2006, Kuala Lumpur 2010 and Dubai 2014.
