IPC Swimming announced on Thursday (16 October) the launch of the entry process for the 2015 IPC Swimming World Championships in Glasgow, Great Britain, where athletes can qualify directly for the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games.
Countries wishing to participate in the Championships, which run from 13-19 July, have been asked to outline the numbers of athletes that they expect to be part of their teams as the first step towards participation.
Agnes Szilak, IPC Swimming Sport Senior Manager, said: “We expect Glasgow 2015 to be the biggest and best World Championships yet.
“Athletes will be able to secure direct qualification spots for Rio as well as experience the full Paralympic Games programme, as the competition schedule will exactly mirror the events taking place in 2016.
“We are therefore very excited about the prospect of seeing the absolute best performances from swimmers with just over one year to go until the Games.”
National Paralympic Committees and National Federations have until 31 October 2014 to submit their delegation calculation forms. The next stage is for them to register exactly how many athletes they will enter per event, a process that will take place during April 2015.
Finally in May, after the period to achieve the minimum qualification standard for Glasgow 2015 ends, teams will be required to submit the names of the athletes they will enter.
The World Championships are the biggest event on the calendar for para-swimming outside of a Paralympic year and the competition is expected to see more than 650 athletes from more than 60 countries compete for honours and qualify for Rio 2016.
Glasgow 2015 forms part of UK Sport’s Gold Event Series, a £27million National Lottery funded initiative which aims to bring up to 70 world class sporting events to the UK by 2019.
The venue will be the Tollcross International Swimming Centre, the same pool that hosted the hugely successful and popular swimming competitions at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games in July and the 2013 Duel in the Pool between the USA and the European Allstars.
